Climate on the island of Roatán

Locals and tourists alike cannot get enough of the local climate. Warm, ideal for a stay or holiday.

How to understand to climate in Roatán?

The climate on Roatán is tropical, which means warm temperatures all year round, high humidity and regular rainfall. Due to its location in the Caribbean Sea, Roatán is subject to slight seasonal fluctuations, but overall the island maintains a pleasantly warm climate that attracts tourists all year round.

Temperatures

Roatán has average daily temperatures between 25 and 30 °C. Temperatures vary only minimally throughout the year. The coldest period is usually winter, especially between December and February, when temperatures hover around 25-27 °C. In the summer months, such as July and August, temperatures can soar to 30-32 °C, but the sea breeze usually makes the heat well tolerated. Night temperatures rarely drop below 20 °C, making for pleasant conditions for evening walks or outdoor activities.

Precipitation and seasonal variations

Roatán has two main seasons: dry and rainy.

  • Dry season (February to May): this period is the most popular among tourists as it offers stable sunny weather, less rainfall and slightly lower humidity. Temperatures stay in the 27-30°C range and days are mostly clear. During this time the sea is calmer, making it an ideal time for diving and snorkelling as visibility underwater is at its best.
  • The rainy season (October to January): this is the period of higher rainfall, especially during November, when the rain is more frequent and intense. Nevertheless, rainy days are not constant in Roatán – showers are short and more frequent in the afternoon, while the mornings and evenings are sunny. During the rainy season, humidity can increase and temperatures range between 25-28 °C. Due to the warm climate, the rainy season does not prevent tourists from enjoying the beach and other outdoor activities.

Humidity

The humidity in Roatán is high throughout the year, reaching 80-90%, which is typical of tropical climates. During the rainy season, humidity increases, which can make some people feel hotter. However, the sea breeze, which is almost constant on the island, greatly alleviates this feeling and brings relief from the sultry heat.

The sea and water temperature

The water temperature around Roatán is pleasant all year round, ranging between 27-29 °C. This makes it ideal for diving, snorkelling and other water sports. The sea is mostly calm, but during the rainy season, higher waves and currents can occur, which can affect visibility underwater and comfort during water activities.

Overall, Roatán offers a pleasant tropical climate that is attractive to both adventurers and tourists looking for a relaxing beach experience. If you want to visit the island at the best time, the dry season from February to May is the best choice. But even in the rainy season it is possible to experience many beautiful days full of sunshine and pleasant weather.
